What are mesh nodes?

Mesh nodes work together to create a mesh network. Mesh networks make it easy to spread an internet connection throughout a large area. You need at least 2 nodes to create a mesh network. One node is hardwired to the Internet via ethernet cable and distributes a wireless signal. The other node acts as an access point/repeater. You only need to hard wire 1 node to get an internet connection on all the nodes. The hard wired node is referred to as the 'Up-Link'. The secondary node/nodes are the 'down links'.

Basic Terminology

Up-Link: A mesh router that is connected(hard wired) to the Internet (usually through a DSL, cable, or LAN).

Down-Link: A mesh router that is not connected to the Internet that repeats the signals from local computers and other nodes to the gateway.

(warning) All mesh devices configure themselves: they become gateways or repeaters depending on if they are hard-wired to the Internet or not.

These Mesh Nodes will need to be installed via Zip Tie to the back of the Kiosk Frame, as they will not fit in the bracket housing

  • Power: Solid green LED that indicates the router is powered up.
  • Mesh: Flash green LED indicates that the router is pairing with another router. It will turn solid green when the Mesh network has been created.
  • Wireless: Solid green LED that indicates the router is broadcasting Wi-Fi. It will flash when there is wireless data transfer.

Up-Link Node Install

  1. Plug the Up-Link device into power and using a Cat6 cable, plug the device's WAN port into a network switch with internet access.
    1. Ensure that the device you're currently plugging in is labeled "Up-Link"
  2. Confirm that you can see the respective device in the Portal and it is online

Down-Link Node Install

  1. Plug this device into power and plug a Cat6 cable into one of the devices LAN ports
    1. Ensure that the device you're currently installing is labeled "Down-Link"
  2. Once the Cat6 cable is plugged into one of the LAN ports of the Down-link, plug the other end of the Cat6 cable to the device you are planning to put online.
  3. Confirm that you can see the device in the GoodCloud Portal and it is online.
    1. This can take about 5 minutes to see the device online, be patient.
  4. Secure the Mesh Node using a zip tie or double-sided tape close to the device frame, as these Mesh Nodes will not fit in the housing of the unit
